What to expect from surveys in India

Survey panels are paid by market researchers, and researchers pay more to reach people in high-spending markets like the US and UK. Indian members therefore tend to see fewer surveys, more screen-outs and smaller rewards per survey than articles written for Americans suggest. Some studies also look for specific cities, languages or income groups. The honest summary: surveys can turn spare minutes into a few rupees' worth of rewards, but they are not a job or a steady income. Anyone offering a guaranteed daily income for "simple online tasks" is almost certainly running a scam (more on that below).

Two sites we review aren't available in India: Survey Authority is US-only, and the Survey Club app is for iPhone users in the US and Canada. The three below all list India as supported.

1. TimeBucks: surveys and tasks, paid by UPI

TimeBucks is a get-paid-to site that mixes surveys, short tasks, videos and app offers. It pays automatically once your balance reaches $3 USD and your account is verified. For India it offers a dedicated method, UPI Payment & Bank Transfer, with a flat $0.45 fee: you enter your phone number in Settings, and on pay day a link arrives by SMS and email where you enter your UPI ID or bank details. PayPal is also listed (4% fee, minimum $0.25). A few India-specific rules from TimeBucks' help center are worth knowing:

• PayTM is permanently disabled for everyone.
• Wise bank transfer is only available to Indian accounts created before 7 January 2025. Newer accounts use UPI.
• The virtual Visa card is blocked in India.

2. Surveoo: a straightforward survey panel

Surveoo is a free survey panel that says it covers 197 countries, India among them. Surveys take roughly 1 to 15 minutes, and rewards are paid by PayPal, SWIFT bank transfer, Amazon vouchers or gift cards, depending on what's available in your country. Surveoo states that payments are processed within 48 hours. It works in a mobile browser, so there's no app to install. Read our Surveoo review.

3. King Opinion: similar panel, published low minimum

King Opinion accepts around 60 countries, including India. It closely resembles Surveoo, with short surveys and the same core payout methods. Its homepage says you can withdraw from $5.50 within 72 hours, but some reviewers report higher thresholds depending on country and method, so check your dashboard before planning. Getting paid in India: UPI, PayPal and vouchers

UPI is the most convenient route where it's offered, which today means TimeBucks. PayPal works differently in India than in many countries: it is mainly for receiving international payments, and received money is generally transferred to your linked Indian bank account rather than sitting in a PayPal balance. PayPal may ask for extra details such as a purpose code for incoming payments, and currency conversion applies. SWIFT transfers are possible on Surveoo and King Opinion, but your bank may charge a fee to receive them, which can swallow a small payout.

One trap with Amazon vouchers: a voucher is tied to one Amazon store. A US Amazon voucher can't be spent on Amazon.in. If a site offers Amazon, check which store the voucher is for before you choose it.

• Use your real name, matching your bank and PayPal accounts exactly.
• Don't share your UPI PIN or OTP with anyone. A legitimate payer only needs your UPI ID to send money; entering a PIN is only ever needed to send money, never to receive it.
• Batch small payouts where possible to reduce the share lost to fees.

• Complete your profile fully, including state, city, languages and occupation. Many studies target specific cities or language groups.
• Answer honestly and consistently. Quality checks catch contradictions and can void rewards; see how to get disqualified less often.
• Never use a VPN to appear as a US member. It breaks the rules and gets accounts closed.
• One account per person. Family members each need their own, with their own details.
• Check at different times of day, since many surveys are launched for other countries' working hours.

The WhatsApp and Telegram "task job" scam

This is the single most important section for Indian readers. A huge number of fake "part-time job" offers arrive on WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram. The script is always similar: you're paid a small amount for liking YouTube videos or rating hotels, you're moved into a group where others post "earnings", and then you're asked to deposit money or buy "prepaid tasks" to unlock larger payouts. The deposits are never returned. Indian police and the government's cybercrime authorities have issued repeated warnings about exactly this pattern, and complaints can be filed at cybercrime.gov.in or by calling 1930.

Is survey income taxable in India?

Income from online activities can be taxable depending on your total income and circumstances. Small, occasional rewards are unlikely to change much for most people, but if your earnings become regular, speak to a chartered accountant or check the Income Tax Department's guidance.
